Terms of Use

Last updated: August 2026

Please read these Terms of Use before using hilut.

1. Acceptance

By using the hilut app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

2. What the app does

Hilut is a tool for splitting shared expenses among a group of people, for personal, non-commercial use. The app is free to download and its core features are free to use. Optional paid subscriptions unlock higher usage limits, as described in section 3.

3. Subscriptions (Taiga Club)

Hilut offers optional auto-renewable subscriptions, together called Taiga Club. They unlock higher limits for AI receipt scans, active rooms, spending history and archiving. Without a subscription you can continue to use the app on the free tier.

Current plans and prices:

  • Saukko — 0,99 € per month
  • Orava — 2,99 € per month
  • Kettu — 99,90 € per year

Prices are shown in euros and may vary by country or region. The price applicable to you is always shown in the app before you confirm a purchase.

Billing and renewal. Subscriptions are sold and billed through the app store you installed hilut from — Apple's App Store or Google Play — not by us directly. Payment is charged to your App Store or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period and price unless you turn off automatic renewal at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends.

Managing and cancelling. You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Refunds. Purchases are handled by Apple or Google, so refunds are subject to their policies and must be requested from them. We cannot issue refunds for purchases made through an app store.

Changes to plans. We may change the features, limits or prices of a subscription. If a change affects a subscription you already hold, it takes effect at the start of your next billing period, and where the law requires it we will tell you in advance so you can cancel before it applies.

Redeemed codes. We may grant access to a paid tier through a redemption code. Such access is time-limited, is not a purchase, has no cash value, and reverts to the free tier when it expires.

4. Your account

You must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country of residence if that age is lower, to use hilut.

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.

We may suspend or terminate access to the app if you breach these terms.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the app for any unlawful purpose.
  • Enter false or misleading expense data that could harm other users.
  • Attempt to access another user's account or data.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app.

6. Data accuracy

The app performs calculations based on data you enter. We do not guarantee the accuracy of any financial calculations. You are responsible for verifying amounts before making real-money transfers.

7. Receipt scanning

The AI-powered receipt scanning feature is provided as a convenience. Results may be inaccurate. Always verify scanned amounts before saving.

8. Currency conversions

Exchange rates in the app are fetched once daily from external financial sources (currently the European Central Bank's daily reference rates). These rates are provided for informational and convenience purposes only and may not reflect real-time market rates or the exact rates applied by your bank or payment card provider.

When you record an expense in a currency other than the room's own currency, the converted amount is calculated once, at the moment you save it, and is not recalculated afterwards. We accept no liability for exchange rate fluctuations, or for discrepancies between amounts shown in the app and amounts actually charged by a bank, card provider or payment service.

9. Settlement calculations and payments

The app suggests a simplified set of transfers that clears everyone's balance with as few payments as possible. As a result you may be asked to pay a person you did not share an expense with directly. The outcome is mathematically equivalent, but it does not represent who owes whom in a legal sense. Amounts are rounded to two decimal places.

Marking a payment as sent, and confirming it as received, are statements made by users within the app. Together they are a shared record that both people agreed something was paid. They are not proof that a transfer occurred and are not a receipt.

The app can open third-party payment applications with payment details pre-filled. Those services are operated by other companies under their own terms. Any payment happens entirely outside hilut, and we neither see nor verify it.

10. Availability and your data

We aim to keep the app available but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The app may be updated, modified, or discontinued at any time without notice.

We take reasonable care of the data you enter, but we do not guarantee that it will never be lost, corrupted or become unavailable. Deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone.

11. Limitation of liability and inter-user debts

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind.

Hilut is purely a calculation and tracking tool. The app does not process real-money payments, hold or transfer funds, act as an escrow service, or provide debt collection services. We are not a bank, payment institution, e-money institution or other regulated financial services provider, and hilut is not a payment service.

Amounts shown in the app are a record of what you and other members have entered. They are not invoices, and recording an amount in hilut does not by itself create, alter or extinguish any legal obligation between users.

Hilut does not guarantee that users will settle their debts, nor does the app resolve or enforce any user's unwillingness or inability to pay their debts to others. Any dispute about money owed is a matter between the users concerned.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the app, including financial disputes between users.

12. Your rights as a consumer

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes rights you have as a consumer under mandatory law in your country of residence, our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or our liability for fraud.

13. Governing law and general terms

These terms are governed by the laws of Finland. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Finland, without prejudice to section 12.

If any provision of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force.
